What and what not to feed robins.

If you’d like to encourage more robins into your garden this winter, there are some simple steps you can take to make the habitat more inviting.

What do robins eat?

Robins enjoy snacking on insects such as beetles and mealworms, as well as seed and fruits. For this reason, they can be great allies to gardeners. Robins have a varied diet, so try putting out some of the following:

  • Fruit
  • Seeds
  • Suet
  • Raisins
  • Unsalted, crushed, or grated peanuts
  • Mild grated cheese (in small amounts)
  • Insects like beetles and mealworms
  • Shop-bought bird feed mix (check the label to ensure it’s suitable for robins)

Robins are ground feeders, so the best way to attract them is with a bird table that is raised off the ground, positioned safely away from the cats. Ideally, choose a covered table with plenty of space for robin to perch.

What not to feed robins

Robins are small birds and cannot consume food that is too large or difficult to digest. Avoid offering:

  • Dried peas
  • Beans
  • Rice
  • Lentils
  • Wheat
  • Barely
  • Bread
  • Milk
