Enjoy the beauty of waterlilies at home or in any space.
Waterlilies are the most popular and easily recognisable pond plants. Often seen in large lakes and ponds, they can also be grown at home.
Planting
To bloom well, most waterlilies need full sun and calm, still water, so it’s best to keep them away from waterfalls, fountains, or pumps. The ideal time to plant them is from mid to late spring through to mid-summer.
Varieties
There are numerous varieties, for instance:
- Small and dwarf waterlilies - Spread: 30 – 60 cm; Water depth: 30 - 45 cm
- Medium waterlilies - Spread: 60 – 120 cm; Water depth: 45 – 75 cm
- Larger waterlilies - Spread: up to 240 cm; Water depth: 75 cm – 120 cm
Tips for care
- Waterlilies are hungry plants. While they absorb nutrients from the surrounding water, you can also feed them with a specialist aquatic slow-release plant food placed in the compost.
- Remove any yellowing leaves as they appear, and cut off faded flowers below the waterline, ideally tracing the stem back to where it joins the main crown of the plant.
- If needed, divide waterlilies every 4 to 6 years, depending on their growth and vigour.
