Short-term tips to protect your hard work.
You’ve put so much effort into your garden, the last thing you want is for your plants to be damaged by the wind.
Cloches
A cloche is a great way to protect young or small plants from the wind. Cloches act like mini greenhouses, trapping heat from sunlight in the air and soil underneath. This increases humidity and helps prevent seedlings from drying out.
If you don’t have a cloche, you can make your own cutting the bottom off a plastic bottle. On warm, windy days, you can remove the bottle cap to allow for ventilation.
Bring them indoors
This is a simple but effective method for potted plants. Just bring them inside until the wind subsides.
Stakes
For large, established plants, push stakes into the ground (not too close to the roots), then tie the plant’s main stem to the stake. You can use string or a similar material.
