Think ahead, get ready, and set the garden ready for Spring.

February is the last month of winter and often the coldest. It’s a time when you might wonder what should be planted, pruned, or left alone because the ground is sometimes too frozen to dig with a gardening tool. Even though it is difficult to tell, there is still time to finishing pruning plants ready for regrowth in Spring.

Things to do this month:

  • If snowing, remove heavy snow from shrubs and trees so that the weight does not snap any branches.

  • Create a wildlife pile. Add woody cuttings such as autumn raspberry canes, and other material from around the garden. It will provide welcome shelter for a range of garden visitors.

  • Create wormery. This is a great way to produce your own liquid fertiliser.

  • Make a final check of seed stocks.

  • Clean and repair garden structures like your greenhouse, shed or fences.
