Reduce, reuse and recycle plastic in your garden.

The invention of the plastic garden pot in the mid-twentieth century changed the way we garden forever. Since then, plastic has become deeply embedded in gardening, found in netting, fleece, hoses, watering cans, and even your garden boots. But plastic is not just in the garden, it’s everywhere in our everyday lives. As gardeners, we have a responsibility to reduce our environmental impact. That means making an effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle in our gardens whenever possible, rather than contributing to the problem.

Things you can do to minimise waste
  • Reuse compost bags as rubbish or garden waste liners.
  • Store plastic items like pots, trays, and lids out of direct sunlight to extend their lifespan.
  • Swap single-use seed trays for sturdier, reusable alternatives like wooden boxes or recycled containers.
  • Collect rainwater in old plastic pots or containers and use as watering cans or water butts. Learn more about water usage in your garden.
